The arrangement is intended for machining thin-walled honeycomb structures, such as may be used for reinforcing aerofoil sections. The operation is carried out by a milling or abrasive cutting tool using a cutting speed between 30 and 100 m/s, preferably between 40 and 80 m/s, or 50 to 60 m/s. The use of these speeds eliminates deformation of the thin honeycomb walls and burred cuts. Air pressure may be introduced (via 17,14) into the honeycomb cells during the operation. The tool used may consist of a number of milling discs (5) of different diameters, with circumferentially offset cutting teeth on a common shaft (6). The envelope curve (7) of the discs forms the desired profile. Similar tools are described for grooving and boring. Cutting teeth may be replaced by abrasive particles.
|
