The expansion joint is intended for arrangement between the ends of two pipes (1,2) carrying higher than atmospheric pressure. It comprises a sleeve (3) in rubber, or the like, whose ends (3a,b) are connected to the pipe ends, and a reinforcing bush (4) around the sleeve. The sleeve has portions (3c,d) which extend in a radially outward direction adjacent to the ends of the bush. The bush is arranged such that these portions roll on to or off the inner bush surface during axial contraction or expansion movements of the pipes. The bush may be of sheet metal, or formed from textile fabric and vulcanised on to the sleeve, preferably in its central area.
