Winding gear for a cable drum includes a winding wheel mounted in a cage so that it can travel to and fro along a shaft with a device at one end. This drives a horizontal chain with a chain pinion at each end. The chain carries a projecting pin which fits into a plate with a slot in it. The drive at one end can consist of a chain with guides driven by a wheel on the winding drum, passing round a chain wheel which in turn drives a wheel mounted on the same spindle as the chain pinion for the horizontal chain. A toothed belt or other chain can be alternatively used for the first drive. The cage travels along a smooth shaft.
