A method and apparatus for the determination of the hydrogen concentration present in a substance by monitoring the e.m.f. generated between the substance and a reference material which are separated from one another by a solid electrolyte comprising a metal hydride; the apparatus comprising a probe containing the reference material, the probe comprising a metal hydride solid electrolyte and being adapted to separate the reference material from the substance when the probe is introduced to the substance.
