Raw petroleum coke or other carbonaceous matter containing a relatively large proportion of volatile matter is calcined in a rotary kiln in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere. The enriched atmosphere permits the oxidation of the hydrocarbon gases driven off as volatile matter during calcination to supply the total endothermic heat needed for volatilization of the lower molecular weight components and modification of the coke structure, thus enabling operation without the use of externally supplied fuel heat. Other advantages include greater uniformity of the temperature of the calcining coke bed, reduction of air pollution through lessening of hydrocarbon and particulate emissions, a decrease in the total volume of emissions, and improved desulfurization of the coke.
