The invention disclosed relates to a device for generating signals whose frequency varies with time. The device includes means for impulsing the inputs of the two delay lines with a variable relative time delay between the impulsing of the two delay line inputs, and a mixer for mixing together the outputs of the two delay lines. Also described is a variable dispersion filter for use in conjunction with the signal generating device. The filter comprises the generator described above, wherein the output of one said delay line is connected to said mixer via a further mixer, said further mixer additionally having an input signal connection.
