Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen are produced when an ammonium sulphite-containing solution, obtained from the washing of the end gas from a sulphuric acid contact plant, is atomized into any type of furnace producing sulphur dioxide whilst maintaining the furnace at over 850 DEG C. with an oxygen excess of 3-9 volumes per cent.
