978,724. Poly-N-diacetic acid imides. J. R. GEIGY A.G. Jan. 18, 1962 [Jan. 19, 1961], No. 1851/62. Heading C2C. [Also in Division D1] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein X represents an n-valent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic-radical, whose chains linking the amino-nitrogen atoms consist exclusively of carbon atoms or of carbon atoms with the inclusion of separate oxygen or sulphur atoms of unsubstituted or substituted imino groups of sulphoxide or of sulphone groups; R 1 represents a hydrogen atom, or an aliphatic or phenyl radical, which latter may be substituted by a methyl group, and n represents a whole number of 2 to 4, and the preparation thereof by heating to at least 100‹C. a poly-N-diacetic-acid of the formula in the presence or absence of inert organic diluents, with an acid amide of the formula wherein R 2 represents a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic residue having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a primary "amino" group. Preferred compounds of the Formula III are formamide, methyl formamide and urea, and the reaction is preferably carried out at 120-180‹C., the water formed in the process being removed by azeotropic distillation with organic liquids. The compounds of Formula I may be halogenated, e.g. with chlorine to give N-chlorimides. |
