The machine inserts flat piece goods such as gingerbread into a collecting package. Although they initially arrive on a conveyor band lying flat, the pieces are placed on edge standing next to each other. A conveyor system (2) is built up of compartments each receiving one piece which is positioned behind the conveyor band (12) and formed so that it can be moved on both in the direction of conveyor movement by a distance corresponding to the thickness of one item of the piece goods (13) as well as perpendicular to the direction of conveyor movement by a distance corresponding to the width of one item of the piece goods. In addition, the conveyor system (16) is coordinated with an installation (24) to supply collecting packages (25) to receive the piece goods located inside the compartments.
