<p>The engine has a cylinder (8) of constant diameter. Two pistons (2, 3) reciprocate in the cylinder on a common axis. A combustion chamber (1) common to both pistons is formed between them. Each piston has a connecting rod (9, 10) to its own crankshaft (11, 12). The cranks are set so that the pistons do not reach top dead centre simultaneously. The cranks may be of identical or different diameters and are connected by gears or chains so that one of them (12) rotates at twice the speed of the other (11). The resulting volume changes in the combustion chamber are such that the expansion stroke is greater than the compression stroke.</p> |
