The firing mechanism is for a machine gun or cannon, where a round is thrust by the breech block from the magazine etc. into the breech, locked and fired. A double-armed arrester lever engages a boss on the block, when this is spring-urged into the position ready for firing, and is actuated by a component on the gun mounting against spring action, this component being in turn actuated by a hand or foot lever. The arrester lever consists of two double-armed levers (A,B) having edges (8,9) at their free ends moving along intersecting circles and working together. A movable stop (14) allows the hand- or foot-operated lever (B) to move into the single-shot position, or keeps it in the position for continuous firing.
