Fibre reinforced bone cement prodn. - by mixing polyacrylate powder, cure catalyst and fibre before adding acrylate monomer

Prodn. of fibre-reinforced bone cement is carried out by mixing 50-70 (wt.) pts. polyacrylate powder, 1.0-2.0 pts. cure catalyst and 5-40 pts. reinforcing fibres and stirring 30-60 pts. acrylate monomer into the mixt. Carbon fibre, pref. with a length of 0.5-3 mm, is used as reinforcement. Before incorporation in the mixt., the fibres are impregnated with an acrylate monomer. The reinforcing fibres are evenly distributed and the cement is much stronger than unreinforced cement. It is useful for anchoring joint protstheses, filling bone defects and as reinforcement in osteosynthesis.
