<p>The invention relates to batch feeders for melting furnaces that deposit a uniform layer of batch material by moving a trough (62) over a desired area of the furnace. The trough (62) has a vibrating agitator (80) which causes a pivotable perforated discharge chamber (94) set within the trough (62) to force the overlying batch material through the perforations (87) in the agitator (80) from whence the batch material falls by gravity into the desired area of the furnace. The size, depth, and distribution of the perforations (87), along with the vibration amplitude and frequency of the agitator (80) control the throughput of the batch material into the furnace when the agitator (80) is in motion and stop the deposition when the agitator (80) is motionless. </p> |
