The hydraulic engine control system comprises two diaphragm chambers (4,9) which have their diaphragms (3,12) coupled (2,10) to the accelerator pedal (1) and the carburettor (11) or fuel injection pump respectively whilst the diaphragms themselves are hydraulically coupled via a flexible hose (7). The hose connects (13) to a cylinder (14) whose piston (15) is adjustable by a positioner via an electronic control unit (16) to vary the oil volume between the diaphragms. This unit may be programmed to provide most economical engine acceleration and/or most economical engine operation at constant driving speed. The unit may be manually switched on and off and/or may be switched off by kick/down of the accelerator pedal.
