(A) 2beta-Chloromethyl-2alpha-methylpenam-3alpha- carboxylic acid 1,1-dioxide of formula (I) and its salt and esters are new. (I) is a beta-lactamase inhibitor useful as a synergist for penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics, e.g. increasing the activity of ceforanide and amoxicillin against resistant S. aureus, E.coli and Bacteroides strains. The 6-(R-2-amino-2-phenylacetamido)- and 6-(R-2-amino-2-p- hydroxyphenylacetamido)-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1- azabicyclo(3,2,0)heptane-2-carbonyloxymethyl esters of (I) are specifically claimed.
