A moulded article is formed by drawing extruded plastic coloured rods at 130-200 degrees C to reduce their dia. by about half and cooling firstly by immersion in water at 15-25 degrees C and then by air at 30 degrees C, before cutting into chips. A layer of chips of the same colour is then introduced in one of several discrete regions in a mould, the discrete regions being defined between baffle plates removably located in the mould. The layers of chips are then smoothed to produce a uniform thickness and then fused by heating to produce an article having different coloured regions. The method is used for making toys. The articles, which are essentially flat, have a high gloss finish. Pref. the mould is located on a table which is vibrated to form the chips into uniform layers.
|
