PURPOSE:To take out hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide alone respectively, by dehydrogenating methanol into methyl formate and hydrogen gas, and treating a mixture of methanol and methyl formate with a thermal decomposition catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Methanol is dehydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. a copper base catalyst, to give methyl formate and hydrogen gas at a reaction temperature of about 100-400 deg.C and a gas space velocity of about 100-50,000hr<-1> and a pressure from about 50kg/cm<2>G to ordinary pressure. The reaction mixture consisting of methanol and methyl formate after separating the gas is treated with a thermal decomposition catalyst to give carbon monoxide. The catalyst consists preferably of active carbon and zeolite. The content of the methyl formate in the mixture is about 10-70wt%, and the temperature is about 200-500 deg.C. The reaction pressure is atmospheric one, and the reaction time is about 50sec-5hr. Thus, hydrogen and carbon monoxide are obtained without requiring a separating operation. |
