The grinding machine removes surface cracks or forms corner bevels on square section metal billets etc. using an elongated table (2) which travels (4) lengthwise on rails (5). High level stops and ram-operated clamp arms secure the billet (3) with its long axis parallel to that of the table. The arms also serve to rotate the billet in 45 deg. increments about the long axis. A grinder (41) can align normal to or at 45 degs. to the billet, being mounted on a ram (53)-operated pivot arm supported by a carriage (37). The carriage (37) traverses the stem (16) of a 'T' shaped beam (16,19) which aligns at 45 degs. to the billet axis. The stem (16) spans the table with the beam taking three point support from massive pillars (18,21) on anchored footings.
