Secure electronic data processing for card terminal transactions - using non-erasable memory data for identification and controlled access erasable memory for transaction recording

Secure electronic data transactions, partic. in card operated banking transactions, are provided by the use of a memory (M) containing permanent storage of identification data, and erasable storage recording details of the transaction. Data from both memory types is combined with some control bits to form a data word which is used to provide full address access to the memory. Data is entered (10) to an interface device (I) which reads cards and accepts terminal data. The entered data is passed to a comparator (C) and to a shift register (RD). The comparator (C) checks each shift register (RD) output bit against the input bit and through a bistable (8) passes the check data to a controller (L) for checking and synchronisation. An address register (RA) accesses the memory (M) when correspondence between the address register and input shift register (RD) occurs. The controller (L) adds control bits to the shift register to allow access (n) to the memory (M) for control bits.
