Transfer of containers from rail to road vehicles - uses two-part wagon with hooks connecting parts and hydraulic jacks to raise and lower them

The transfer of large containers from railway wagons to road vehicles is facilitated by a wagon which has a chassis made in two parts (30,31) which are joined together with a joint (10) that can be easily dismantled. The outer end of each part of the chassis is supported on a bogie (1,2). A container (32,33) is supported on each part of the chassis. When it is required to transfer a container to a road vehicle, auxiliary wheels (4) are lowered to the track by hydraulic jacks. The joint (10) is dismantled and the two parts of the chassis are moved apart. The end of one part is then raised by the jack to the height of the load platform of the road vehicle. The container is then slid onto the load platform.
