The modification to a linear motor is intended to greatly improve the utilisation of the active material. The excitation part of the motor comprises two permanent magnet sections and a ring coil. It carries two pole faces on opposite sides, and one on a mutually perpendicular side. The excitation sections are built up serially along the axis of motion. Successive ring coils are connected to differing supply phases. The passive magnetic circuit is split into two parallel sections. Each has pole faces on top and side. The top faces interleave and the side faces are staggered. The construction ensures that practically all the air gap flux participates in generating thrust.
