Room temp. curing silicone resin compsn. comprises (a) 100 pts. of an organopolysiloxane of formula R'nSiO(4-n-m)/2(OH)m (I) in which R' is a monovalent hydrocarbon gp. which is opt. substd. n= 0.80-1.80 and m has a value such that the number of OH atoms bound to Si makes up 0.01 wt. % of the resin; (b) 0.5-50 pts. wt., pref. 1-15 pts. wt. of an alpha, omega-dihydroxydiorganopolysiloxane of formula HO(R''2SiO)qH (II) in which R'' is an opt. substd. monovalent hydrocarbon gp., and q is a whole number >=2; and (c) a silicone type compsn. chosen from (i) a silane of formula R'"a SiX4-a (III) in which a = 0, 1 or 2 and X is a gp. which is hydrolysable by water at room temp., and (ii) a hydrolysis and condensn. prod. of the silane (i). The amt. of component (c) in the compsn. is such that the compsn. can be stored under anhydrous conditions but cures at room temp. in the presence of water. The prods. can be stored under anhydrous conditions but cure at room temp. in the presence of moisture to give coatings and films with good resistance to light, air, water, corrosive gases, acids, alkalis and solvents. The prods. can be applied e.g. to metals, plastics, wood, glass, ceramics, rubber, cement, brick, tiles, slate, etc. The coatings have good water repellency, anti-adhesive properties, and electrical properties. They are useful e.g. as protective coatings, anti-graffiti coatings, for the lining of pipes, as casting- and mould release agents, as coatings on electrical insulators, motors, kitchenware etc. |
