The transmission ratio of the transmission is variable in accordance with a load dependent and speed dependent control value. The control value is a signal generated by an electronic control unit, which is transmitted as an electrical signal or as the pressure of a pressure medium to a final adjustment member of the transmission in static communication with a pressure accumulator. An idle valve can be connected beyond a pump, and on exceeding a predetermined pressure in the pressure accumulator, uncouples the pressure accumulator from the pump and connects it to a return. A controlled valve can be provided for generating a variable pressure of the pressure medium.
