Pure hydrogen is produced by introducing a reactant gas stream into conduit 14 containing a catalyst bed 12 where reaction occurs to form a gas mixture containing H2, which passes via manifold 16 into H2-permeable tubes 18; the H2 permeates through the walls into space 22 and is withdrawn at 24, while the remaining gases pass into manifold 20 and are withdrawn <PICT:1057328/C1/1> at 26. These gases, e.g. CO2 and residual H2, may be burned with air and used for preheating. Withdrawal of H2 may be effected by applying a positive inlet pressure, by superheating the reactants, or by applying a vacuum to the H2 outlet. The reactants may be water and methanol, ethanol, propane, butane, gasoline, kerosene, or diesel oil. The catalyst may be 1% Pd on an alumina carrier. Temperatures of 343 DEG or 350 DEG C. may be employed. The H2- permeable tubes may be of Pd metal or alloy foils (e.g. 73% Pd-27% Ag), alone, or supported on porous stainless steel. |
