PURPOSE:To improve the prevention of accidental involvement, by maintaining a side guard at a prescribed height in straight running, lowering the guard in the first stage at turning to the left or right and lowering further the guard in the second stage at sensing of a person or material. CONSTITUTION:A side guard 8 is retained at or near a legally prescribed limit throughout running on a straight road. When the driver of an automobile going to turn to the left, for example, lights the left-hand flasher lamp, a pressurized fluid flows into left-hand fluid cylinders 13, 14 to move down the left-hand side guard 8 in the first stage. When a sensor provided on the outside of the side guard 8 detects nothing, the vehicle continues to turn to the left. When the sensor detects a person or material, the pressurized fluid further flows into the cylinders 13, 14 to move down the side guard 8 in the second step to place the bottom of the guard 8 close to the ground. |
