The invention relates to a herbicide and to its use for the selective control of grass weeds, such as Panicoideae and wild oats, in dicotyledon and monocotyledon crops such as soya beans, cotton, sugar beet, wheat and the like. They are preferably used post-emergence (after the plants have emerged). As active substances of the composition, there are proposed 4-phenoxy- alpha -phenoxyalkanecarboxylic acid derivatives which are substituted in the nucleus, of the formula <IMAGE> in which the preferred meaning of the radicals defined in greater detail in Patent Claim 1 is as follows: R1 is halogen, R2 is NO2, in each case in the ortho- or para-position, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, R5 is lower alkyl (in particular methyl) and R6 is O-alkyl. Particularly interesting are 4-(nitrochlorophenoxy)- alpha -phenoxypropionic acid esters of lower alcohols. A process for the preparation of the new active substances is also decribed.
