An ashtray has a closed chamber 1 (Fig. 2) for the retention of smoldering cigarette stubs insertable into the chamber through an opening provided with pivoted traps 3 and 4, the traps being biased by gravity to fall into the open position shown in dot and dash lines unless held closed by the weight of a sliding sleeve having a flange 14 which bears on the traps 3 and 4. The sleeve comprises a body 8 having an upper part of enlarged diameter provided with projections 11 for engaging a lid sleeve 12 which is provided with the flange 14. Movement of the sleeve is restricted by a flange 9 which engages a ridge 7 formed on the inner chamber 1. In a second embodiment (Fig. 6) the traps are pivoted on rods located in vertical recesses in the chamber 1 and the outer parts of the traps are curved so as to be part circular.</p> |
