The platform has a front loading section, comprising a side- operating clamp (42). This lifts a bale (11) and deposits it onto the platform (2). A second bale is similarly picked up and pushes the first bale over to the far side. Elevating forks (58) roll these bales onto the platform, to a stop (9). A similar second row is moved along by hydraulic pushers (12). Additional bales are lifted onto the lower bales and the unit pushed rearwards. The process is repeated to fill the platform. To unload, the pushers are used with a rear tailgate (32,33).
