The detector is secured to the fishing rod leaving the line completely free. The detector comprises a vibration sensor, such as a piezoelectric element, rigidly contained in a sealed housing secured to the rod by a screw clamp or the like, and a signal integrator (18,19) which applies the amplified piezoelectric signals to a monostable circuit (23-25) controlling a buzzer (26). The monostable also controls an oscillator which flashes a light emitting diode on activation. The sensitivity of the device is varied by moving it along the rod or by use of a variable resistor (20) in parallel with the integrator. The device is insensitive to vibrations caused by wind, currents and the like.
