The walls are exposed to rays emitted by radioactive prods; and are covered by sealed metal boxes contg. a solid, pasty or liq. material absorbing neutrons, e.g. water contg. a boron cpd., which may be pressurised in the box. Each box is pref. provided with a valve, so that if its internal pressure increases, e.g. by heat, the valve limits the pressure and also permits evapn. of water. The valve may be made of a material melting at a specific temp. Metal gudgeons are pref. used between the boxes to produce a rigid assembly; and the gudgeons are pref. used with heat exchangers to cool the wall. Esp. for the walls of containers designed for the storage and transport of radioactive prods.
