Method of forming a protective layer on a thin magnetic layer esp. a moving magnetic memory (tape, disc or drum) comprises vapour deposition or spray deposition of a supplementary layer of metal or alloy capable of forming a stable hard oxide layer, then oxidising this layer. The surface of the magnetic film has improved wear resistance.
