Appts. includes a lance in which a receiving vessel is located. The vessel has an upper side hole and a top hole with a lid; and a temp. sensor extends downwards through the lid into vessel. The sensor has electric leads travelling upwards through the lance and a protective refractory tube surrounds the upper part of the sensor. Vessel is pref. divided into two chambers sepd. from each other by a horizontal wall contg. a hole. Instead of a refractory tube, a plate can be used to protect the sensor which e.g. has a U-shape. Instead of using a refractory tube or plate, a metal tube or plate may be employed where the metal resists attack by the molten metal being sampled. Appts. consists of a sampling lance in which a thermocouple is used to detect a phase change and therefore the % C in the molten metal. The lance also produces a sample for spectrographic analysis etc.
