<p>PURPOSE:To obain the titled compound advantageously, by the condensation of a diester of an alpha-alkylglutaric acid with a diester of oxalic acid, in a nonpolar aprotic solvent, in the presence of a strongly basic alkali metal compound, under specific conditions, and by the subsequent hydrolysis. CONSTITUTION:A dialkyl ester of an alpha-alkyl-, especially methyl-, glutaric acid is condensed with a dialkyl ester of oxalic acid, in a nonpolar aprotic solvent, especially an aromatic solvent having a boiling point of 130 deg.C or above, in the presence of a strongly acid alkali metal compound, especially an alkoxide or hydride, at a temperature of 130 deg.C or above in the latter stage, preferably at 0-80 deg.C in the first stage, more especially at 0-40 deg.C, and at 130 deg.C or above in the second stage. After the solvent is removed from the resultant solution, the condensation product is hydrolyzed with an aqueous inorganic acid, preferably without isolation, to give the titled compound useful for a flavoring agent, etc., readily from raw materials industrially available from a by-product, etc. with ease.</p> |
