A continuous method and apparatus are disclosed for forming and electrostatically orienting mats of discrete particles of lignocellulosic material on electrically non-conductive transfer surfaces (31-36) and then transferring the directionally oriented mats onto a grounded, moving, electrically conductive, mat-receiving surface (17) under the continuing influence of an eletrostatic field without loss of orientation of the particles of lignocellulosic material making up the mats.
