The femoral base is for a total artificial hip joint, having a boss at the top accommodating the femoral head, also a head plate. The periphery of this plate (3) is joined to the lowe lower stem (1) by surfaces (1c,1d) of large radius, their curvature being such as to form a wedge jamming in the mouth of the medullary passage, without the underside of the plate exerting any restriction on the spur of merckel or the corresponding anterior and posterior corticals.
