A sorting system for postal packages, e.g. undeveloped photographic films, uses an intermediate conveyor as a storage unit. Unsorted packages are dropped onto the storage conveyor (9) through a trap door at a selected location. The end of the conveyor has a profiled ramp section (12), such that packages build up without being discharged. The conveyor (6) is provided by a roller (10) at one end and a pair of rollers (11) that are in contact with a drive from a motor. A main frame (9) is mounted on wheels (8), enabling the unit to be moved when full.
