The pump has a shaft carrying two or more impeller wheels on it. Each wheel has centrifugal blades. The stator carries guide blades between the impeller stages which channel the liq. radially inwards from the outlet of one stage to the inlet of the next. The stator guide vanes increase in axial depth from the inlet at their radially outward end to the outlet at their radially inward end. This increases the cross section of flow in the direction of flow to convert kinetic into potential energy and avoids the secondary circulation set up if the conversion is done in the tangential direction.
