Alkylene glycol ether ester prodn. - by reacting ester with alkylene oxide using zirconium halide catalyst

Prodn. of carboxylate esters (I) of alkylene glycol ethers is carried out by reacting alkylene oxides (II) with carboxylate esters (III) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Zr halide and opt. a cocatalyst comprising benzotriazole, a 2-12C N-alkylcarboxamide, a N-(1-4C alkyl) pyrrolidone or a prim. sec. or tert. monoamine. (I) are useful as solvents for paints, lacquers, adhesives and printing inks and as plasticisers. The process gives high yields of (I) with esp. high selectivity for the mono-adducts.
