The external-combustion two-stroke piston engine comprises two parallel pistons (1) connected to 180 deg. offset cranks on a crankshaft with a flywheel. One cylinder provides inlet (via 9) and compression while expansion and exhaust (via 10) take place in the other. Air is compressed into alternate compression chambers (2,3) arranged in the external combustion chamber (4) within the cylinder head. The connection between the cylinders and the chambers (3) is via ports in a slide valve (5) transversely moved via cams (7) driven by the crankshaft via reduction gearing (8). The hot exhaust air is utilised via a heat exchanger.
