A separator for removing oils and other light fluids, esp. hydrocarbons, from the mixt. also contg. sludge and a large amt. of contaminated water arising in garages, filling stations, car washes etc. has a large capacity tank with outlets for oil and for water, sludge being settled in the tank for removal at long intervals. A bell-shaped container dips into the tank, enclosing a body of water on whose surface floats the oil which is released through an upper outlet. A dip pipe for removing the oil can also act as an air exhaust. The oil is first removed when its depth is about 1/8 to 1/9 of the water depth below it. The settled sludge is not contaminated by oil, and occupies a relatively small space in a single tank.
|
