Pyrolysis of fragmented ligneous materials - with recovery of charcoal and liq. and gaseous products

prodn. of charcoal, distillate liqs. and gases from dry fragmented ligneous materials (e.g. wood chips) is carried out by initiating an autothermic pyrolysis process in a partially permeable insulated vessel. Once started, the pyrolysis process proceeds without external heat supply and gives high product yields, e.g. 32 kg of charcoal, 50 kg of liqs. and 18 kg of gases (CO2, CO, CH4, H2) from 100 kg of dry beech wood. The liqs. can be combined with the charcoal to produce a fuel or distd. to produce coke.
