An arrangement for securing payment of the hire charge of a motor car consists of a prepaid token 1 bearing fins 1 1 which are progressively cut away according to the use made of the car. As described, a car includes a sliding drawer 12 receiving a token 1 and a movable carriage 22 supporting an electric motor 23 driving a cutter 24, and a reversible motor 48, the carriage being driven from right to left by the car engine to cut away the fin 1 1 . A pivoted lever 61 bearing against fin 1 1 actuates switches 66 and 67. Initially, switch, 43 is closed by the drawer 12, switch 66 closed by lever 61 on sensing a fin, and switch 79 closed by an ignition key to allow the engine to be started by push-button 21. The carriage 22 is moved to the left by a flexible drive from the engine, rotating a captive nut 50 engaging a screw 49 on the carriage, until an abutment 56 closes a switch 58 flashing a warning signal 17 indicating that the fin 1 1 is nearly exhausted. At the same time a roller 68 pivots a lever 69 operating a meter 18 giving details of the mileage left in the fin. When the fin is completely cut away switch 66 is opened and a switch 67 closed to energize the motor 48 through contacts 59. The motor continues to drive the carriage to the left until abutment 57 closes switch 59 to energize solenoid 87 through contacts 59 2 and reverse the motor 48 to return the carriage to its initial position. A timing device in parallel to switch 66 may be operated by the driver to close the ignition circuit for a fixed period and allow the driver to withdraw the slide 12 and place another fin in the operating position without being forced to stop the car. A camera 71 and flashlight 77 are operated on starting the car to record identifying marks on the key and token together with a registration plate, clock 75 and calendar 73. A lever 40 operated by an electromagnet 35 when the drawer 12 is closed grips the token in the operating position by means of milled extensions on its perimeter. |
