The apparatus has a device grasping the end portions of a plastic band located one above the other and a heating device (270) which melts the mutually confronting surfaces of the band portions (56, 57). The frame (60) of the apparatus carries a first pressure element (64) with ribs (301) of equal width and with grooves (300) of equal width, located between them, and a second printing element (210) with ribs (305) and grooves (306) of equal width. The cross-section of the grooves (300, 306) is rectangular and their bottom is flat and rectangular. The cross-section of the ribs (301, 305) is likewise rectangular, and these have an elongate, flat and rectangular end face. The width of each end face is substantially smaller than the width of each of the recessed faces in the grooves. By means of such an apparatus, a firmer connection of the band portions overlapping one another can be achieved. <IMAGE>
