[Also in Division C3] Lubricating and fuel oil compositions comprise as dispersants esters of formulµ where one R is hydrogen and the other an alkenyl or substituted alkenyl radical containing 30 to 200 carbon atoms and derived from a polyalkene; R2 is an alkylene, alkenylene or arylene group of 2 to 25 carbon atoms having at least 2 carbon atoms between the piperidone nitrogen and the carboxy group or -[-CR3R5CR4R6-O-]- n CR3R5CR4R6- where R3, R4, R5 and R6 are hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl or phenyl and n is 1 to 25; Y is OR1 where R1 is C 1-24 alkyl, NQ 2 where Q is H or C 1-24 alkyl or -NH-[-ANH-]- m H; Y1 is XZ or NQ1 2 or -NH-[-ANH-]- m H where Z is hydrogen, C 1-24 alkyl or cycloalkyl, phenyl, (C 1-8 alkyl)phenyl, naphthyl or phenyl(C 1-8 alkyl); X is O or S; Q1 is hydrogen or C 1-10 alkyl; A is C 2-6 alkylene and m is 1 to 10. The lubricants may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. dialkyl adipates, azelates and sebacates, phosphate esters, polyesters, polyethers and silicones. The fuels may be gasolines, jet and Diesel fuels and furnace oils. The fuels and lubricants may contain conventional additives extensive lists of which are given. Examples describe the preparation of additives by reacting polybutenyl succinic anhydride with (1, 2 and 15) N-2-hydroxyethyl-5- carbethoxy - 2 - piperidone, (3) N - 2 - hydroxypropyl - 5 - carbomethoxy - 2 - piperidone, (4) N - 2 - hydroxyethyl - 5 - carbobutoxy - 2 - piperidone, (5) N - 2 - hydroxyethoxyethyl - 5 - carbethoxy - 2 - piperidone, (6 and 7) N - 2 - hydroxyethyl - 5 - N - methylcarbamyl - 2 - piperidone, (8) N - 2 - hydroxyethyl - 5 - N - n - butylcarbamyl - 2 - piperidone, (9) N - 3 - hydroxypropyl - 5 - N - n - octylcarbamyl - 2 - piperidone, (10) N - [2 - hydroxydecaethoxyethyl] - 5 - N - t. - octylcarbamyl - 2 - piperidone; polypropenyl succinic anhydride with (11) N-2- hydroxyethyl - 5 - carbethoxy - 2 - piperidone and (12) t.-butylamine and N-[1-methyl-2-hydroxypropyl] - 5 - N - methylcarbamyl - 2 - piperidone; and polyoctenyl succinic anhydride with (13) dimethylamine and N-2-hydroxydecyl - 5 - N,N - dimethylcarbamyl - 2 - piperidone and (14) t-octylamine and N-[2-hydroxy- 2 - phenylethyl] - 5 - N - t. - octylcarbamyl - 2 - piperidine; and the incorporation of the products in compositions comprising mineral oil and zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates; di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate, tricresyl phosphate and phenothiazine; mineral oil, tricresyl phosphate, sulphurized sperm oil and 4,41-methylenebis(2,6-di-t.-butylphenol); and mineral oil, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates and a basic calcium sulphonate.
