[Also in Divisions E1 and F2] In an hydraulic system for operating at least two groups of extendable and contractable stabilizing stays 3, 4 of an earth working vehicle, the stays are attached to double-acting hydraulic rams 101, 102 arranged in at least two groups, preferably at opposite ends of the vehicle, the rams of each group (only one of each of which is shown) are fed with fluid in parallel and independently of the other group(s) through a single distributer 104, and two conduits 110 and 111 are provided each leading to one group and each having two branch conduits 110a, 110b or 111a, 111b one of which is provided with a calibrated main valve 115 or 118 while the other is provided with a non-return valve 116 or 119 acting in the opposite direction to its associated main valve. Lines 113, 114 lead to rams connected to any further groups of stays. The lines 111 and a return line 109 include controllable normally non-return valves 117 and 120. To extend the stays the valve 104 is raised directing pressure fluid through the lines 107 and 109, the valve 117 and the line 101a to first extend the rams 101. When the rams 101 are fully extended the line pressure increases until the calibrated valve 118 opens when the rams 102 are extended until all the stays engage the ground when the line pressure again rises until a relief valve 122 opens. To retract the stays the valve 104 is lowered when pressure fluid is supplied through line 112 first opening the valve 120 for flow in its reverse direction to permit fluid from the left hand side of the rams 102 to return to a receiver 105 and then entering the right hand side of the rams 102. When the rams 102 are fully retracted the line pressure rises to open the valve 115 and hence to open the valve 117 for flow in its reverse direction and to retract the rams 101. A further line 102a 1 may be provided through which further rams may be extended simultaneously with the rams 102, the retraction of the further rams being controlled by a controllable valve 120a controlled by a special element or by a pressure other than that in the line 112.
