PURPOSE:To stabilize the internal resistance of an alkaline battery and to improve its leak proofness, by providing a sheetlike thickener in close contact with a spongelike negative electrode of porous zinc. CONSTITUTION:A sheetlike thickener 4 is provided in close contact with a spongelike negative electrode of porous zinc. These are disposed opposite to a positive electrode 2 with a separator 3 interposed therebetween, thereby constituting an alkaline battery. The spongelike negative electrode 5 is prepared, for example, by plating copper on a foamed resinous body, removing the resin through a heat treatment of the copper-plated body, and then plating zinc on the resulting porous copper body. On the other hand, the sheetlike thickener 4 is prepared by, for example, applying a thick solution obtained by dissolving starch in water on a glass plate by means of a roller, drying the solution, peeling the resulting film off from the glass plate, punching the film into a desired shape. The sheetlike thickener 4 has a thickness of 0.07-0.15mm. and a weight equivalent to 0.5-5% by weight of an electrolyte to be charged in the battery. In this constitution, the thickener is dissolved or swollen by the electrolyte and dispersed uniformly into the negative electrode. Accordingly, the internal resistance of the battery can be stabilized and its leak proofness can be improved. |
