The cable core (2) is fed at a constant rate from an unwinding spool (1) into an extruder (4). In the extruder (4), the cable core (2) is sheathed with a plastic or rubber coating. After this, the cable core (2) is fed into a vulcanising tube (5) in which it is heated by means of radiant heat (zone A), after which it is cooled with cooling air (zone B). Located behind the vulcanising tube (5) is a twisting device (7) by means of which the cable core (2) is twisted about its longitudinal axis during the insulating and vulcanising process. The twisting device (7) consists of two strips which are arranged crossed over with respect to one another and between which the finished cable (12) runs. This prevents the pitches of the conductors which form the cable core (2) becoming aligned and the complete cable core (2) becoming loosened. <IMAGE>
