A system for handling valuable documents within a monetary institution includes a main data processor (HD) and a plurality of control units (SE) or branch data processors (FD). Arranged to co-operate with those control units or branch data processors is a document-handling intermediate means (IE, UE) said means having individually identifiable cassettes. Means are provided which when there is relative movement between a cassette (K1) and a document-handling intermediate means (IE) and when there is relative movement between a document and a document-handling intermediate means (IE), enable information concerning such relative movement to be sent to the main data processor (HD) so that said main data processor contains available information concerning the identity of the cassettes and their possible connection to the document-handling intermediate means (IE, UE), and the document content of the cassettes. The cassettes are provided with electronic locks activatable from the data processors (FD, HD). The data processors are provided with monitoring means, arranged to ensure that the cassettes are inserted and removed before the lapse of a given time limit. |
