The alkali resistance of Si coatings on glass is improved by the presence of electron donors, e.g. olefins, in the coating material. The glass substrate is heated to >=400≦̸C and contacted with a gas stream contg. a silane, an inert carrier such as N, and the olefin. Thus, the olefin is ethylene and the ethylene/silane ratio is 0.1-2. The n of the coating is 2.8-3.4.
