The solid workpieces are placed in a drum made of lattice-work or grids and rotated on a horizontal axis. Drum is partly immersed in a detergent soln. (B) to cause agitation and washing of the workpieces; and rows of nozzles are used to spray soln. (B) through the walls of drum to provide hydrodynamic washing. In the pref. machine, soln. (B) is kept at constant height in a tank; and a work-basket is used to hold the workpieces. The work-basket is lowered into drum by a hoist. Drum pref. has a square cross-section, and is rotated via a motor and gearbox. Used esp. for cleaning filter rings used in a plant for the filtration of slurries contg. hydrocarbons. The rings were formerly destroyed via calcining, but the latter is very expensive, because the vol. of the rings from a filter is ca. 600 cu.m., and calcining also causes environmental pollution. The present invention permits the cleaned rings to be re-used.
